Indonesian Journal of Education Methods Development is dedicated to preserving academic integrity, research originality, transparency, and ethical standards throughout the scholarly publishing process. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies become increasingly common in research and academic writing, this policy establishes clear principles for their responsible use by authors, reviewers, and editors.
The use of AI must always remain under meaningful human supervision. Individuals who use AI-assisted tools remain fully accountable for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and ethical compliance of the work they submit, review, or manage.
Authors may use AI-assisted technologies for limited supporting purposes that do not replace their intellectual contribution.
Language Editing and Writing ImprovementAI tools may be used to improve grammar, spelling, sentence clarity, readability, and writing style. Authors must carefully review all AI-assisted modifications and remain fully responsible for the final text.
Examples for Illustration or ExplanationAI-generated examples may be used when they serve an explanatory or illustrative purpose. Any such material should be clearly identified, appropriately acknowledged, and used only when relevant to the academic discussion.
Assistance with Data Processing and AnalysisAI-based tools may assist researchers in analyzing data obtained through legitimate research procedures. When AI contributes to the analytical process, authors must clearly explain the technology used, relevant settings or parameters, the purpose of its application, and how the resulting output was validated.
Generation of Substantive Scholarly ContentAI tools must not replace the intellectual work of the authors by independently producing substantial portions of a manuscript, including the abstract, theoretical discussion, literature review, methodology, interpretation of results, discussion, or conclusion. Authors must retain responsibility for the scholarly reasoning and arguments presented in the manuscript.
Fabrication or Artificial Production of Research DataAI must not be used to invent, manipulate, fabricate, or falsely simulate research data, statistical outcomes, experimental results, participant responses, or other forms of evidence presented as genuine research findings.
Artificial Generation of Research ImagesAI-generated or AI-manipulated images, figures, or other visual research materials are not permitted when their use may compromise the authenticity, reliability, or ethical integrity of the scholarly record.
Authors are required to disclose relevant use of AI or AI-assisted technologies during manuscript preparation. The disclosure should appear in the Acknowledgments section or another section designated by the journal.
For example:
“The authors used [name of AI tool] solely for language editing, grammatical correction, and improvement of readability. All generated suggestions were reviewed and verified by the authors.”
Authors remain responsible for every part of the manuscript regardless of whether AI-assisted technologies were used.
Reviewers may use AI tools only for limited supporting tasks that do not replace their independent scholarly judgment. Appropriate uses may include:
Improving grammar, clarity, organization, or readability of a review report.
Assisting with routine verification of references or basic factual information, provided confidentiality is maintained.
Reviewers must not delegate the intellectual assessment of a manuscript to an AI system. Evaluation of originality, methodology, scientific quality, significance, interpretation, and publication suitability must remain the responsibility of the reviewer.
Reviewers must not upload confidential manuscripts, unpublished data, supplementary materials, or identifiable manuscript content to external AI platforms when doing so could compromise confidentiality.
Reviewers should remain alert to possible inappropriate uses of AI in submitted manuscripts, including fabricated references, artificially generated data, unreliable content, or undisclosed AI-generated material. Any serious concern should be communicated confidentially to the editorial team.
The confidentiality of manuscripts and peer-review materials must be maintained at all times.
Editors may use AI-assisted technologies for limited administrative and communication-related purposes, such as:
Supporting routine editorial workflow management and manuscript tracking.
Improving the clarity, grammar, or presentation of administrative communications, reviewer invitations, reminders, or editorial correspondence.
Editorial decisions must not be delegated to AI systems. Decisions concerning scientific merit, originality, methodological quality, ethical acceptability, or suitability for publication must be made by qualified human editors.
AI-generated editorial correspondence must not be sent without appropriate human review, verification, and approval.
Editors are responsible for maintaining appropriate standards regarding AI use throughout the publication process. This includes:
Ensuring that authors provide adequate disclosure when AI-assisted technologies have been used.
Investigating inconsistencies, undisclosed AI use, fabricated material, or other ethical concerns when appropriate.
Maintaining a fair and rigorous peer-review process in which editorial and reviewer judgments remain fundamentally human.
Providing reviewers and editorial staff with appropriate guidance concerning confidentiality, transparency, and responsible AI use.
AI systems may produce inaccurate, misleading, biased, incomplete, or fabricated information despite presenting such information in a convincing manner. Therefore, AI-generated or AI-assisted outputs must never be accepted without appropriate human verification.
All parties involved in the publication process are expected to ensure that the use of AI technologies complies with principles of:
accuracy and reliability;
transparency and accountability;
confidentiality and data protection;
research integrity;
informed consent where applicable;
protection of intellectual property;
avoidance and mitigation of algorithmic bias; and
responsible handling of sensitive or unpublished information.
AI tools must be regarded as supporting technologies rather than independent authors, reviewers, editors, or decision-makers.
Violations of this policy may result in appropriate editorial or ethical action depending on the nature and severity of the case.
For authors, possible actions may include manuscript rejection, requests for correction, investigation of research integrity concerns, or retraction of a published article when serious misconduct is established.
For reviewers, misuse of confidential manuscript information or inappropriate reliance on AI may result in removal from the journal’s reviewer database or other appropriate action.
For editors, improper use of AI or failure to maintain the required ethical and editorial standards may result in internal review and corrective measures in accordance with the journal’s policies.
Indonesian Journal of Education Methods Development recognizes that AI and AI-assisted technologies may provide useful support in scholarly communication when used transparently, responsibly, and under appropriate human supervision. However, such technologies must not replace human intellectual responsibility, scholarly judgment, or accountability.
By following this policy, authors, reviewers, and editors contribute to maintaining the credibility, transparency, reliability, and integrity of the scholarly publication process.
